Frequently Asked Questions
The following is a list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ):
How much clothing do I need to remove?
Ultimately, that is up to you. If you are uncomfortable, you won't be able to focus on enjoyment and relaxation, no matter how good it is. I treat many clients fully clothed and give great massages. That being said, generally all clothing is removed for a Swedish, Maintenance Sports or Deep Tissue Massage because they are broad, whole body styles. This will enable you to get the best massage possible, as there are key muscles around your hips, pelvis, and sacrum (tailbone) that clothing interferes with massaging. Your bikini areas will always be covered by a drape and never touched; so no part of you will be seen or touched that shouldn't be.
For Clinical and Trigger Point Massage whatever area is being treated should be unclothed and this includes adjacent areas that influence treated areas.
For Event Sports Massage athletes stay in shorts and shirts.
What can I expect from a 60 minute massage?
That depends on the type of massage we agree to have. In more specific work like Clinical or Trigger Point Massages one area is treated thoroughly. In a 60-minute Swedish Massage, your whole body will receive a "basic" massage, and I can spend some extra focus on one or two parts and do some deeper work. I've had clients that just want me to focus on their back for the whole hour. No problem. It's your massage, and I will cater to your needs. But generally, the most common request tends to be "neck and back"... which will alleviate much of the stress that most of us experience and tend to "hold" in those areas. You might want "legs and arms", or "feet and back"... who knows? Again, it's your massage, this is YOUR hour, and it's all about YOU. Tell me what you want.. and I aim to please.
What can I expect from a 90 minute Swedish Massage?
For a 90-minute massage you will receive that extra focus/deeper work on your whole body (neck, chest/arms, abs, legs, feet, back). This, obviously, is the best option if time and money allows. The reason I say that is because, while you may be experiencing the "smoke" of tightness in your neck, for instance-- the real "fire" may be in your left calf. The strain in that left calf might cause you to compensate by putting all of your weight on your right leg, which makes your pelvis un-level, which causes your back to lean to the left, and then your neck leans to the right to keep your head "level"... which results in your sore neck, back, etc. So the best way to take care of the "smoke" is to first find the "fire"--and put IT out! The 90-minute massage is a good step towards doing just that. The 90-minute time frame also allows you to reach a deeper relaxation, resulting in more therapeutic, healing benefit--as well as just being more bang for your buck.
How long will a whole session take?
You should arrive 15 minutes before our first appointment to fill out a health intake form and so that we can talk about your overall goals for the session. For return visits, 5-10 minutes should be fine. For Out Call Massages, I also need the 15 minutes to set up my table. I also need time to clean up afterwards and to discuss the massage with you afterwards.
So for a 60-minute massage -- allow 90 minutes. _90-minute massage -- allow 2 hours. _While the massage may not actually require all of this time, factor in _possible late start, set up table, linens, music, cleanup time, etc. _A massage is for you to relax.. so try not to make it a time crunch if possible.
What payment do you accept?
I accept CASH. and checks for established clients and businesses. I am working towards credit cards, but am not there yet.
What do I need to do to prepare for a massage?
For Out Calls Prepare an open space, AT LEAST 8' x 10' of open space is needed. If you take a shower before I arrive, you will get the most benefit from the massage, because you will have started the relaxation process which means we can go that much further in the session. You may also want to take a shower following the massage to wash off any remaining oil.
For Studio Appointments, a shower before hand and arriving 15 minutes early to talk and fill out paperwork.
Do you offer a "sensual massage"?
"Sensual" is defined as "relating to, or pleasurable to the physical senses". So by this definition, YES, every one of my massages is sensual. However, the word "sensual", in some people's minds, has the connotation of "sexual" so by that definition, NO, we do not provide any sort of sexual/erotic service. If you are after sex or happy endings or anything illegal or inappropriate, look elsewhere!
Can I get a female therapist?
Sorry, I am my one and only therapist, but having gone to school in Chicago and as a faculty member of a massage school, I have women that I could refer you to. This business is about relationships and everyone should have a therapist that they are comfortable with. That said, I hope that you could give me a chance to show you what I can do. The massages of my female therapist peers are also NON-SEXUAL! Mistreat or disrespect them, and there will be a reckoning!! (Plus, they will leave and you will pay the full amount for the massage)
What about tips/ gratuities?
While not mandatory, they are always appreciated. How much to tip? The "general" tip amount is around 15-20%. If you remember that you normally tip a server at a restaurant 15% or more.. and they are only visiting you for a few minutes here and there during the course of your meal. A massage therapist is placing 100% of their focus on you, and is intent on meeting your needs for the whole time you are with them, so I would think a good tip would be at least the same as a server's. If they've gone above and beyond or have done an exceptionally good job, feel free to tip accordingly. Again, tips are not mandatory, but always appreciated
What type of massage do you do?
My massage is based on a Swedish massage. I use body mobilization, muscle therapy, deep tissue, trigger point therapy etc. as needed per person. Each massage is customized for an individuals wants and needs. I have explanations of the different styles under the services section of the website. I like to list all of the styles so that people have a starting point to understand what I do and what they can expect.
How is it done? Do you use a table, oil?
The massage is usually done on a table, oil is usually used. Again it comes down to specific needs of specific people. I work with some older clients who aren't comfortable face down or unclothed, so I adjust my method, but on a table with oil gives the most flexibility and specific results.
Will my massage be painful?
Not usually, but occasionally some discomfort is experienced specifically with Trigger Point work and Clinical Massage or if the tissue being worked is traumatized. Some people feel a massage must hurt to do any good. I totally disagree with this theory. Pain is the body's response to injury, therefor a painful massage is most likely doing tissue damage.
How often should I get a massage?
This depends on two things. How do you feel and how much can you afford. Most of my regular clients get massage about every two weeks. Some more often and some less often. You will be the best judge of you're own situation._
What qualifications do you have?
If you go to my "About" page, I have everything listed.
